What Is a Transfer Case and When Does It Need Service?

Four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive vehicles have a specialized component called a transfer case. Essentially, the role of a transfer case is to split your engine's power and distribute it to all four wheels via the front and rear axles. On all-wheel and four-wheel drive vehicles, it's in the center of the drivetrain system.

The type of transfer case you have will depend on how your vehicle operates. Off-road vehicles may have one with lower gears to better handle rough surfaces. A modern, active 4WD SUV may have a more complex set-up to accommodate different drive modes. Difficulty shifting gears, jumping in and out of 4WD mode, and grinding noises coming from below your vehicle are common signs of a transfer case problem.

If you suspect transfer case issues, visit our service center at Welsh Motors Inc.. Our technicians will evaluate your vehicle's transfer case, transmission, and other key drivetrain components.
